Weekly Report on Somalia.

Saturday, 20th, 2012.

Around four operations were carried out by Somali National Security Agencies, NSSA and African Union Mission in Somalia, AMISOM.  They have managed to take over a strategic village, Leego, the furthest village in lower Shabelle region, linking Bay and Lower Shabelle region. NSSA and AMISOM have also managed to arrest many people suspected of being behind string of attacks against them.
Shebabs, on the other hand, were able to carry out at least 6 attacks against NSSA and AMISOM in various parts of the country.
Ordinary citizens and and journalists were also killed or wounded, around 10 people were killed and more than 20 wounded.

Reports and Analysis.

A man who sell beds was killed in Kismayo, on Saturday, 20th, 2013[1]. His killers are not known.

Hiiraan reported details that shed light to a grenade that was lobbed to a wedding on Friday, 19th 2012: dancing between men and women to celebrate a wedding.

If so, such attacks are typically carried by Shebab and thier supporters.  Scholars who even support this group don't approve such acts, neither do they condemn it.

Up to 20 people were wounded as reported by local and international news agencies on Saturday, October 20th, 2012.

Hiiraan.com reported 3 deaths and 7 injuries. Others have reported up to ten injuries[2].

iiraan have also reportsed the death of two civilians and 3 injuries after a suspected Shebab supporter threw a hand grenade to a popular restaurant in Heliwa, Banadir region. The target was a Somali soldier, but many civilians were harmed, as reported[3].

Up to now, it appears Shebab supporters have killed 5 and wounded 10 people into two days. This is is a very conservative figure.

BBC Somali Service reported today, Saturday 20th, 2012, in its afternoon program, an operation against the insurgent carried out by members of NSSA, in which tens of people suspected of being members of Shebab or accused of committing crimes were apprehended.
The security of the town has improved as string of operations ware carried out by NSSA. The government appears to have delivered one of its promises, improved security.

A yamani citizens accused of importing assortment of weapons was today sentenced by Puntland state of Somalia.
Sentences against Shebab suspects and other groups in Mogadishu are not generally broadcasted, a lost deterrence.

 Sunday, October 22, 2012.

One person was reported to have been killed in Marka, Lower Shabelle region[4]. This makes the people killed this week 4, 2 of them killed by Shebab supporters, and 23 injured, most of them carried out by Shebab supporters.
Conflicting reports are coming out from a mine that harmed some Ethiopian soldiers in Baladwayne, Hiiraan, a central Somalia region[5]. Some say it was planted for them, others say they were de-mining[6].

A journalist working for Shebelle Media was wounded in Madina district, Mogadishu, Somalia[7]. An official from this media house informed BBC Somali service in its afternoon program of 21 October, 2012, that the journalist was saved by members of Somali security forces from attempts by his assailants to finish him, but they did not pursue them for the purpose of brining them to justice.
Some sites have reported missile attack by members of Shebab on Afmadow district, Lower Jubba region, in which five civilians were wounded[8]. Pro-Shebab sites, such as amiirnuur.com and somalimemo.net, have also reported this, omitting civilian casualties, on October 22, 2012.  This increases the number of people wounded by Shebab this week to 15.

Monday, October 22nd, 2012.

Two separate attack s were reported today by BBC Somali service in its programs, carried out by Shebab, one was minor, a grenade was lobbed to Kismayo district center, and another was a direct confrontation at two separate places in Baidhabo, Bay region[9].  Numbers were not made available.

Two other separate attacks were also reported on the same site, between Kulbiyow and Badhaadhe, lower Jubba region[10].  This information was not widely reported by local and international organizations.

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012.

Neither VOA  nor BBC Somali service reported today conflicts in south-central Somalia today. However, BBC has reported an explosion in Las-anod, Sool region, in which 4 people were wounded, including a man suspected of having planted the mine[11].  Otherwise, Somalia was peaceful today.

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012.

Conflicting reports are emerging about conflict in Kismayo, Lower Jubba region. BBC Somali service reported two separate attacks conducted by Shebab[12], one at the airport and another at via Afmadow, a section of Kismayo city, Somalia. Both sites were military basis. But some sites and Somali government officials confirmed only one grenade attack in Kismayo[13].

Operations were carried out by NSSA in which 70 people were arrested, some were later freed[14].

A journalist working for Universal TV was also killed in Las-Anod, Sool region. The incident was widely reported to day. Reasons for his killing have not been revealed nor were suspects apprehended.
Thrusday, 25, 2012.

Somali National Army, SNA and African Union Mission in Somalia, AMISOM have attacked position of Shebab in Leego, the last village in lower shabelle region. They have managed to take over the village[1].

A mini-bus carrying civilians travelling from Baidhabo, Bay region, to Walla-wayn, Lower Shabelle region, was hit by an explosion that killed at least 6 people and many more were injured[2].

VOA Somali section says it spoke to eye witnesses who stated that the explosion was a missile thrown by Somali government forces or their allies, African Union Mission in Somalia[3].

However, witnesses who spoke to AFP did not know who fired the missile. Also many Somali sites stated that the missile that hit the mini-bus was unintentional[4].

Accounts from local and international sites agree that there was a war going on between Shebab and Somali government forces, and its allies.

In any case, no senior government official spoke about the matter. This is unfortunate.  The matter ought to be investigated and casualties compensated if the government is responsible about their harm. Silence favors impunity and continuation of such events.

Friday, October 26, 2012.

Somali National Army, SNA and African Union Mission in Somali army, AMISOM, is said to have attacked Shebab basis in the outskirts of Afgooye district, Lower Shabelle region[5]. I have not seen in any other site report this information.

The same site also reported skirmishes between members of SNA in Bakara market, Mogadishu, Somalia. One died during the confrontation[6].  As far I know the event was not reported by other sites, be local or international.

The same site have also reported a off duty Kenyan army officer being killed in Hagardheere, a refugee camp in northeastern part of Kenya, populated by Somali refugees[7]. I was able to confirm this information from BBC Somali service interviews with people n this camp.
